The best basketball tournament of the year! (so far)

The whole of Sixth Class was buzzing. Everyone was getting ready to play against St. Furseys N.S, our close rivals. Boys and girls erupting in excitement, chatting nervously with their friends until the final moments before they had to play.

St Fursey’s walked over first thing in the morning and we all had a quick warm up outside on the basketball court. We couldn’t have asked for better weather! The girls teams played first. Mr McShane picked the first 5 girls and every 5 minutes, played 5 new girls until everyone who wanted to, had a chance to play. After this the boys played their match, also making lots of subs.

The basketball matches were a close call. The teachers weren’t really focusing on the score, the day was relaxed, it wasn’t that serious. Or so they thought, every child was keeping score and waiting for the final whistle to blow.

In the end the girls won comfortably. It had been a close game until near the end when Pola scored a couple of lay ups in a row to put St Francis in a comfortable lead. The boy’s match was much closer. We took an early lead after a superb long range shot from Kian but St Fursey’s stayed tight right up until the end. The final match had lots of scores but in the end, St Francis won by a point.

There were also a lot of snacks provided by the school and being laid out by Beth and Chloe. Beth’s favorite memory from the tournament was when Saibh allegedly knocked over the juice with a basketball. This reporter would like to take the opportunity to confess that Saibh was actually innocent, and it was actually Ava Rose who knocked it over!

Alex D, a prominent player, said, ‘I thought we were cooked because they were much bigger than us, but in the end we weren’t cooked!’

Sophie exclaimed, ‘I think it was very very good because we got to meet our other friends from the other school. I hope when St. Oliver’s comes to our school it’ll be just as good.’

Fiadh summarized it like this, ‘We got to have a day out in the sun, and we also got to play and have fun for the whole day.’

Overall, it was a good day regardless of who won (us bro). It was kind of our teachers and SNA Maria to set up a tournament for us and we hope we get to enjoy a few more.
