Last Friday the pupils from 6th class of our school were given the opportunity to go to the Irish Military War Museum for WWI and WWII at Starinagh, Collon, County Meath.

The museum brought a variety of interesting facts, weapons and machinery for the students to learn from. The WWI section showcased a replica of the trenches, large machine guns, the evolution of gas masks and horses. For the realism effect, music and gun shots were added to the background noise. For the WWII section there were many uniforms of soldiers from both sides and old boxes of Hershey’s and Coca-Cola that were popular in that era.

The second part of the tour included a talk where a few students were picked to put on uniforms and hold actual weapons that were passed around from person to person to get a feel.

We were shown guns such as the Mauser carbine, AK47, Glock 47, M1911 and the M1 Grand. A variety of muskets with bayonets were also showcased as well as grenades and blades.
